For the first time in 21 years, the month of June has arrived and the Seattle Mariners find themselves in first place in the AL West. The Mariners have won seven of their past eight games and built a four-game lead over Texas in the divison. They've taken that lead because of their pitching. Seattle's five starters lead the league in quality starts. The overall dominance of Seattle's pitching is making up for an offense that ranks near the bottom of the league. The Mariners are 28th in runs per game, 28th in batting average, 24th in OPS and lead the league in strikeouts.

New Jersey plans to drop the bald eagle from its endangered species list

  • By MIKE CATALINI - Associated Press

New Jersey is citing a rebound in bald eagle populations as it proposes removing the national symbol from its endangered species list. State environmental officials say the turnaround stems from the work of volunteers and professionals who nurtured hatchlings, guarded nests and educated the public. Monday's proposed rule to delist the bald eagle as endangered also includes the osprey. Officials say they have recovered to the point where the survival of those species is no longer in jeopardy. The federal government removed the bald eagle from its list of endangered species in 2007.

'State of Palestine' applies to join South Africa's case at top UN court accusing Israel of genocide

  • AP

Palestinian officials have applied on behalf of the “State of Palestine” at the top U.N. court for permission to join South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. The request published Monday says that Israel’s ongoing military operation is “part of a systematic effort to wipe Palestinian society and its culture and social institutions from the map.” The request to the International Court of Justice was signed by Palestinian Authority foreign ministry official Ammar Hijazi. South Africa filed its case with the International Court of Justice late last year accusing Israel of breaching the genocide convention in its military assault that has laid waste to large swaths of Gaza. Israel denies it is committing genocide.

Penn State found 'friction' between coach James Franklin, team doctor; could not determine violation

  • By RALPH D. RUSSO - AP College Football Writer

An internal review by Penn State in 2019 found evidence of “friction” between football coach James Franklin and a now-former team doctor. However, it could not determine whether Franklin violated NCAA rules or Big Ten standards by interfering with medical decisions. The 15-page document from Penn State’s office of ethics and compliance was obtained by The Associated Press. Last week, a Pennsylvania jury awarded $5.25 million to Dr. Scott Lynch after he won a lawsuit against the hospital that employs him. The report left undetermined if actions by Franklin or anyone else at Penn State broke rules. It recommended further inquiry.

Fraud trial juror reports getting bag of $120,000 and promise of more if she'll acquit

  • AP

A juror was dismissed from a multimillion-dollar fraud trial on Monday after reporting that a woman dropped a bag of $120,000 cash at her home over the weekend. She said the woman told her relative that she would get still more money if she voted to acquit seven people charged with stealing more than $40 million from a program meant to feed children during the pandemic. These seven are the first of 70 defendants expected to be tried in a conspiracy that cost taxpayers $250 million. It's one of the nation's largest pandemic-related fraud cases. Prosecutor Joseph Thompson said the bag of cash seems like “stuff that happens in mob movies.”

Atlanta water woes extend into fourth day as city finally cuts off gushing leak

For at least some residents, Atlanta’s water problems aren't over. Resident Milena Franco says flow was cut off to her apartment before dawn Monday, leaving her a dry shower. City officials say water was shut down in the immediate neighborhood as part of a successful effort to stanch the flow from a broken water main. A large swath of the city remains under an order to boil water before drinking it, even in areas where pressure was restored after an first mammoth leak was fixed Saturday.

The team is 1-6-4 over that span, dropping to 13th in the Eastern Conference and 24th overall in MLS. Assistant coach Rob Valentino will take over as interim coach while Atlanta conducts the search for Pineda’s successor.

CEO pay is rising, widening the gap between top executives and workers. What to know, by the numbers

  • AP

The typical compensation for CEOs of S&P 500 companies keeps climber higher — and outpacing the wages of average workers today. In its annual analysis of CEO pay for The Associated Press, executive data firm Equilar reviewed the salaries, bonuses, perks, stock awards and other pay components of 341 top executives. The survey found that median CEO pay jumped nearly 13% last year, more than three times the 4.1% that wages and benefits netted by private-sector workers rose through 2023. Beyond the widening gap, the survey also spotlights persisting gender inequity — with women still making up a minuscule amount of those with chief executive titles compared to their male counterparts.
