John Walker Jr was a Prisoner of War captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana during the United States Civil War.

John Sumter Walker Jr. was born on February 4, 1836, in Georgia to John Sumter Walker Sr. and Nancy M. (Renfroe) Walker. By 1850, he resided in Division 47, Jones County, Georgia.

A decade later, in 1860, Walker had moved to Blue Bayou Township, Sevier County, Arkansas, near the Center Point post office, where he worked as a merchant and owned at least thirteen slaves.

On May 17, 1860, Walker married Martha Ellen Kinsworthy in Sevier County, Arkansas.

With the onset of the Civil War, Walker enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 27, 1861. He joined Company G, known as the "Southern Flag Company," which was initially organized as part of the 37th Arkansas State Militia and later became the 12th Arkansas Infantry upon integration into the Confederate Army. Walker started his military service as a captain and subsequently earned a promotion to lieutenant colonel. His unit was tasked primarily with defending Confederate positions along the Mississippi River. They took part in the defense of Island No. 10 in early 1862 and were later stationed as part of the garrison at Port Hudson, Louisiana, in 1863. After the garrison surrendered to Union forces on July 9, 1863, Walker was taken prisoner. He remained in a prison camp for the rest of the war and was paroled on June 11, 1865, after pledging allegiance to the United States.

By 1870, he was living in Washington Township, Sevier County, Arkansas, near the Ben Lomond post office, continuing his work as a merchant.

By 1900, Walker had relocated to Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where he was employed as a cotton seed agent. He passed away on November 3, 1901, in Arkansas and was interred at Wilton Cemetery in Wilton, Little River County, Arkansas.
