MOBILE JOURNALISM: the emergence of a new field of journalism

Vania Baldi

– This article was developed within the scope of the Erasmus+ PAgES project, and it aims to investigate mobile journalism (mojo) as a new digital journalism technique that is based upon three characteristics: agility, flexibility, and accessibility. The proposed hypotheses are that mobile journalists can produce news content quickly and also include a greater variety of formats. In addition, access to remote locations and characters for interviews has been facilitated. Exploratory research tested these hypotheses using a mixed-method approach: an online survey (53 responses), to assess the degree of agreement/disagreement of the mobile journalists themselves regarding the hypotheses; and four interviews with experts to understand their perceptions of this new approach to journalism. The result of the research was favorable to the hypotheses and confirmed the process of individualization in journalism. It also ratified mojo as a journalistic technique suited to the demands of the 21s...

Smartphones and social media have changed how the media gather, produce, edit, and disseminate news. By employing the journalistic capital concept, this paper examines how journalists in Kompas.com, one of the pioneers of online media in Indonesia, incorporate mobile journalism practice into their work. This article explores how journalists and newsrooms respond to change that coincides with mobile devices and social media in the newsroom. The qualitative data analysis obtained from in-depth interviews with Kompas.com journalists and document analysis revealed that the application of mojo in Kompas.com is relatively new and is still looking for a form. Kompas.com integrate mobile smartphones into journalistic work to produce stories with a multimedia approach to meet changing journalistic and business needs. Journalists are expected to produce journalistic content in short videos using mobile devices related to daily events around them. Thus, the practice of mojo emerged as a new or...

Abstract The era of mobile media has placed communications convergence at a new stage. The importance of studies about mobile communications has been growing increasingly over the last years. This growth is connected to the increase in the access to contents through new devices. The last ten years have seen a process of acceleration in mobile technology innovations. The peak of this new scenario has been the interest of the research community in investigating the relationship between such innovations and the spread of informative contents. This article analyses those studies that address the relation between mobile devices and communication and journalism. The main objective is to clarify the current state of these studies as well as to define their significance within the current convergence scenario. In order to reach such objectives, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted. The authors analysed 199 research articles published between January 2008 and May 2018 in the database Web of Science. The findings suggest that the United States has the largest number of studies in relation to this topic. We can pinpoint the highest increase in scientific production about journalism and mobile communications in 2013. Besides, it exists a dominance of those articles related with actants upon those ones about actors or audiences.

Early adopters' experiences of using mobile multimedia phones in news journalism

2009 •

Heli Väätäjä

Today’s mobile multimedia phones with broadband connectivity have brought novel ways for journalists to live out their hectic profession. We interviewed six forerunners in Finnish news organizations on mobile phone usage in news production. Here, we present our results on how and why they use mobile phones in news production and provide implications for design and development. Our results show that users are delighted to use mobile phones in journalistic work if they can gain personal benefits from it, like more efficient use of time. Participants were not satisfied with the audio quality of mobile phones or mobile text editors. However, they considered mobile phones suitable for capturing short Internet videos. One reason constricting mobile production is editorial processes that are not designed for receiving material produced with a mobile phone. This causes extra work both in the newsroom and in the field.

Mobile Journalism 101: Teaching Students to Use Mobile Devices to Produce News Content

2015 •

Mark gerard

INTRODUCTIONMobile devices such as smartphones and media tablets present significant technical innovations to the news industry. The technology offers users the ability to consume as well as produce news. Mobile devices are powerful reporting tools that can produce audio, video, photos, and texts for nearly instantaneous publication online.News organizations are increasingly requiring their reporters to use mobile devices for reporting. A broad range of broadcast journalism positions, for example, now require mobile skills and, regardless of media platform, journalism employers want new hires to understand how to gather news with mobile devices (Wenger, Owens, & Thompson, 2014). The demand for these skills is growing. Wenger and colleagues found that in 2010, references to mobile skills were mentioned in just a little more than 2% of television job postings. However, "By the end of 2012, mobile was mentioned in more than 27% of all TV news job listings-and that still lags behin...

Epistemology of mobile journalism

João Canavilhas

The fast and global way which has characterized the presence of mobile phones in society has sparked the interest of several sectors of activity, including journalism. From the early stages of production to distribution, and then through the characteristics of content and consumption patterns, numerous changes have been introduced by these mobile devices in an activity that has been undergoing one of the most uncertain moments in its long history. This uncertainty has stemmed from the decrease in income which was caused by the emergence of new competitors, such as the online press and social networks. This bibliographic review aims at identifying the changes caused by smartphones in the production distribution and consumption of news, analyzing its effect on the epistemology of journalism. We attempt to ascertain if the increasing influence of mobile technologies in the journalistic activity has changed its nature, improving the production of knowledge. Upon closer reading of the bi...

Mobile Journalism and Innovation

Marcos Palacios

Using a qualitative methodological approach, this chapter brings to bear a theoretical and conceptual framework with particular consideration to the notions of innovation, journalistic convergence, design and the theory of affordances, as well as mobile communication and mobile journalism. This analysis covers the period 2010-2014 and seeks to examine the specific affordances, the structure, organization and types of narratives produced; the design and use of multimedia features as well as the level of integration with other products in the same news organization. The empirical corpus consists of products selected for their representativeness within a broader sample: O Globo a Mais, Estadão Noite, and Diário do Nordeste Plus (Brazil), La Repubblica Sera (Italy), La Presse+ (Canada) and El Mundo de la Tarde (Spain). The study concludes that - although timid - experimentation continues to prevail regarding formats, content, language and narratives based on the features of mobile devic...
