I just took a MUCH needed vacation. I am lucky enough to have been able to travel to Spain and Portugal and it was an absolutely unbelievable experience. My partner and I hiked, drove, explored, sampled port & wine, ate unbelievable food (if you know you know) - and overall just had an amazing time and decompressed. The one draw back? I had to come back 😂 Yup I'm a walking cliche - we were sitting on a beach and I looked at my partner and said "should we just...move here?"And for a moment we started talking about it and what our conversation led to (beyond "how do we move our dog with us?), was the stark difference in working conditions between countries. The vacation standards for many European countries are far beyond what we have in North America. Beyond that, in 2021, the European Parliament passed a legislative initiative that implements "the right to disconnect." While there are provinces that have followed suit on the latter, the first is still a massive point of contention. A US Study shows that despite Canada being a G10 economy, we are in the bottom third in terms of paid vacation for employees. All provinces guarantee 2 weeks - which translates into 10 days. I was chatting with a British couple on a wine tour (this isn't all doom and gloom - you should go to the Douro Valley)Anecdotally, their minimum is 20 days - which translates to 4 weeks. And according to them, if that's all they get, then it is really the short end of the stick. I looked it up, and according the gov.uk website - it's 28 days - 5.6 weeks. 28 DAYS. AND IT DOESN'T EXPIRE. Digging into this more - we chatted about sick leave, personal leave, stat holidays, etc - and the undeniable conclusion was that their implemented legislation is resoundingly more employee forward. I'll be the first person to tell you I am not an expert in employee/employer relations, I don't work in a legislative capacity, and I'm not an economist. But when I'm consistently hearing jokes from myself, my peers and friends about moving abroad - based on this one sliver of evidence, it makes me wonder - is it really a joke? Those who can get remote work, those who can transfer to different areas in international companies... at some point, are there going to be huge communities of expats living together because of macroeconomic, microeconomic and personal conditions? Anyways - to the 900+ of you that follow me - thanks for listening to my ramblings. Also - if you can find a traditional Portuguese restaurant in your city - would recommend giving it a try because *chefs kiss*. Happy Monday ya'll ✌
